如果过去几年你在上海参加过派对，你一定碰见过Frau —— 不管是在舞池里，还是在DJ台上流畅地放送他精心挑选的house和techno。
这一缕澳洲艳阳正在悄悄地提高我们场景各处的水准，扶持其他艺术家，同时自己也成为了国内顶级俱乐部的常客。周五，他将在电梯举行他的新项目百会BAIHUI的首发派对。在这之前，我们跟Frau聊了聊他理想中的派对，值得期待的艺术家和他对上海场景的看法：
If you've partied in Shanghai in the last few years, you've run into Frau - both on the dancefloor, and gliding through immaculately selected house and techno in the booth.
This slice of Australian sunshine has been sneakily raising the bar across multiple zones of our scene, lifting other artists up while becoming a staple DJ in the country's nicest dance spots. Ahead of his new project BAIHUI's launch party at Elevator on Friday, we caught up with Frau about dream parties, artists to watch and his take on the Shanghai scene -

我是Matt，来自澳大利亚墨尔本。澳大利亚的料理就只是简单做的食物，没什么特殊技巧。我很喜欢这一点。但我最喜欢的是地中海、中亚、中东的料理，它融贯东西。还有所有橄榄油做的东西。
你是怎么成为Frau的？这个名字是怎么来的？
我的姓—— Hildebrandt ——是德文，小时候别人给我起的外号叫Hilda。有些朋友叫我Frau Hilda，所以当我要起一个DJ名的时候我就用了Frau。这是对性别角色的戏谑，我一直都很喜欢这么玩。
Frau在德语里是女人或者“夫人”的意思。
能不能告诉我们你怎么开始玩音乐和舞曲的？是什么带你走进DJ，并开始组织派对？
我最开始是个听独立摇滚的小孩。高中毕业之后，我开始去俱乐部，上大学时每个周五我都会去墨尔本CBD一个叫做Honky Tonks的俱乐部，每个周四我则会去Prahran的onesixone俱乐部。那是Ed Banger的新新浪潮（electroclash）的时代，Justice正当红。我追随Klaxons也买了NB的鞋，Cut Copy和The Presets如日中天。我会读NME（New Musical Express，英国音乐杂志）。
- Introduce yourself pls! Where are you from and what foods do you like?
I’m Matt from Melbourne, Australia. In Australia the ‘cuisine’ is just food cooked in a simple way without too much done to it. I like that. But most of all I love mediterranean/central asian, middle eastern food. That cross over from the east to the west. Anything in olive oil.
- How did you become Frau? Where does the name come from?
My surname, Hildebrandt, is German, growing up I had the nickname Hilda. Some friends called me Frau Hilda so when I needed a DJ name I took the Frau and ran with it. It’s a play on gender roles, which I’ve always liked. Frau means woman or Mrs in German.
- Can you tell us about how you started out with music / dance music? What got you into DJing and organizing parties?
I was an indie rock kid in the beginning. I got into clubbing when I finished high school. During Uni days, every Friday I’d go to a club called Honky Tonks in the Melbourne CBD and Thursdays to onesixone in Prahran. It was Ed Banger, electroclash times. Justice was huge. I bought new balance like the Klaxons. Cut Copy and The Presets were everything. I read NME.
- Any particular early memories of partying or music that stand out?
Dancing with Peaches at Honky Tonks after a music festival. At that club I was pretty young compared to most of the crowd. The younger crew that went there all started wearing rolled up bandanas around their necks. I did too. I remember the door girl one night when I rolled up at the club with my cute neck bandana. She said, laughing, ‘your friends are already inside.’

对早期的派对或音乐有什么难忘的回忆吗？
音乐节之后在Honky Tonks和跟着Peaches一起跳舞。我跟那个俱乐部的很多人比年纪太小了，去那儿的年轻人都在脖子上系着头巾。我也系了。我还记得一天晚上我系着一条可爱的头巾来到俱乐部时，门口接待的女孩笑了，说：“你的朋友们已经在里面了。”
不管作为艺术家还是舞者，你在上海以外还参与了什么场景？它们有什么特别之处？
墨尔本的夜生活文化很不错。很多很棒的音乐，但是因为气候原因，说实在的，最好的表演还是日间派对和音乐节。我没法不提柏林。在任何时间，你都有地方可去，在这城市里有一种能量场，总让你往下一个地方跑，就算疲惫也阻挡不了。人们都筋疲力尽的时候就是最好的时候。
- What other scenes than Shanghai have you participated in - as an artist, or as a dancer - and what made them special?
Melbourne has a nice nightlife culture. Lots of great music, but with the weather, to be honest the best gigs are day parties and festivals. I couldn’t not mention Berlin. There’s always somewhere to go at any time, and there’s an energy in the city that means you do keep going to that next place, running on exhaustion. The best times are when people are wrecked.
- What makes the Shanghai's scene special?
Shanghai supports an experimental scene that few other cities can do, on par or better than Melbourne or Berlin even. I love how promoters and DJs of different music genres are all social and part of the same community. I think that’s because the scene is young but I hope it continues like that. Many subcultures that coexist in one music community.
- Who do you respect or look up to in the local music community? Who are your favorite artists right now in China, and why?
Always Knopha, so much respect for his variety. I’ve never heard him play the same song twice and each night or radio set you won’t get what you were expecting, in a good way.
Xiaolaba I’ve know since he used to come to my bar, Smash. I guess a bit over a year ago he hit me up to play NTS, I had no idea he’d started DJing. He has a unique sound that is very danceable and a lot of fun.
Hyph11E is always amazing.
Venus Flytrap is really impressing me. There are many many more. I love when I’m surprised by a set. I guess that’s what I try to do as well. Surprise myself.

上海场景的特别之处是什么呢？
上海对实验场景的支持是很多别的城市都做不到的，这一点甚至可以和墨尔本或者柏林相提并论。我很喜欢的一点是来自不同音乐流派的派对发起人和DJ们都很爱社交，而且都在同一个社群里。我觉得这是因为这个场景还很年轻，但我希望它以后也能这样。有很多种亚文化共同存在于一个音乐社群里。
在本地的音乐社群里，你最尊重或者认可的是谁？谁是你在中国最喜欢的艺术家？为什么？
永远是 Knopha，非常佩服他的多样性。我从来没听过他放两次一样的歌，而且每个晚上或每个电台set，他都会超越你的期待。
小喇叭 我已经认识了，因为他之前会来我的酒吧Smash。大概一年多以前他找到我，说想去NTS电台放歌，我完全不知道他开始做DJ了。他有一种独特的声音，非常适合跳舞，也非常好玩。
Hyph11E 永远都很赞。
我对 Venus Flytrap 的印象很深刻。还有很多很多。我非常喜欢被一个Set惊艳到的感觉，我猜这也是我尝试做到的事情。惊艳自己。
你在上海的DJ台后度过的最难忘的一晚是？在舞池上呢？
我就讲讲最近最难忘的吧，因为我在上海呆了9年了，这样的夜晚有很多。我最近在俱乐部玩的最开心的一晚是HTTP，那一场有Hyph11E, Yinan, Sulk, Venus Flytrap和Offskii。
我的星相可能在那晚合上了，因为我充满了能量，那晚给力的舞者们和精彩的演出把我填满了。
上海或中国的场景改变了你的音乐吗？如果有，在什么方面？
当然，我是那种很看人群反应的DJ。舞者的期望是我选歌时的一个考虑因素，但是从核心上讲，我总是放我自己喜欢的歌。我信任我自己，如果有一首歌是在我的U盘上的，它不会是平白无故被放在那里的，它是可以放出来的。
可以选三首歌让我们简单了解一下你这些年的音乐口味吗？（从早期的发现或者影响你的音乐，到现在的真爱？）
我得改写一下这个问题来让我更方便回答。我讲三个艺术家或者DJ，以及他们各自作品中让我得到过灵感的一首。
1.Priori – Anform
太空感十足，深邃，清脆的节拍，这首beat总能让你在舞池里继续跳下去。Mau mau和我开玩笑地讲过一个不存在的流派，叫做“类Priori”，意思就是听起来可以是Priori作品的单曲。
2.Erika de Casier - Better Than That
这首歌是一石二鸟，因为首先，Erika太优秀了，而且她代表了我对高质量流行音乐的爱。第二，她的单曲是由DJ Central制作的，他和他的兄弟DJ Sports、以及整个丹麦的Aarhus团队是我很大的灵感来源。他们的音乐领域从精彩绝伦的downtempo和ambient一直延伸到deep house, tech house, Techno和Drum n Bass。就算只放他们的歌，我也能轻松放一整个set。
3.Kia

- What was your most memorable night in Shanghai behind the decks (or machines), and on the other side of the booth as a dancer?
I’ll just say the most recent most memorable, cause I’ve been in Shanghai 9 years and there is many. The most fun I had at a club night recently was HTTP with Hyph11E, Yinan, Sulk, Venus Flytrap and Offskii. My moon stars must have been aligned or something cause I had so much energy and fed off a great crowd and incredible performances.
- Has the scene in Shanghai / China shaped your music? If so, how?
For sure, I’m the sort of DJ that plays off the crowd response. Crowd expectations play a role in my selections but at its core, I always play songs that I like. I trust myself that if I have a song in my USB, it’s there for a purpose and can be played.
- Could you pick 3 tracks that gives us a sense of your taste in music over the years? (from early discoveries or influences, to a current favorite?)
I’ll rephrase this question a little to help myself answer it. Three artists/DJs and an example of their tracks that I find so much inspiration from.
1. Priori - Anform
Spacey, deep, dubby stabs, a beat that always puts you onto the next step while you dance. Mau Mau and I joke about a made up genre called Proto-Priori, which is tracks that sound like they could be a Priori track.
2. Erika de Casier - Better Than That
This track hits two birds with one stone cause first, Erika is amazing and represents my love for quality pop music and secondly, her tracks are produced by DJ Central, who is a huge inspiration, along with his brother, DJ Sports and the rest of the Aarhus crew out of Denmark. They make everything from sublime downtempo and ambient, to deep house, tech house, Techno, Drum n Bass. I could easily play a set of just music from these artists.
3. Kia
Kia is a DJ from Melbourne that has put me onto so much more great music that was always sitting just on the periphery of my tastes. Really nice dubby, bassy, minimal, techy progressive styles and BPMs that were previously out of my comfort zone.

你在音乐路上遇到的最大挑战是什么？

葡萄酒，欧洲产的自然酒，一瓶龙舌兰酒，苏打水，以及一张放在脚下的软地毯，这样我就可以光着脚放歌。
- What were the biggest challenges you've faced on your musical journey?
Starting to make my own music has been a really fun challenge recently. I’m looking to release some tracks before the end of the year. Stay locked on that.
- How do you prepare for your gigs spiritually?
Rest and preparation. Maybe a glass or two of wine before heading out to the club. A coffee at the start of the night if it’s gonna be a late one. Gigs are always more fun when you’re prepared.
- What would you put on your magic hospitality rider where every wish can be granted?
Wine, something European and natural, a bottle of tequila, soda water and a soft rug under my feet so I can play barefoot.
- If you could time travel and give yourself two pieces of advice when you were just starting out, what would they be?
1. Set up cue points on rekordbox before the gig
2. More music collaboration with your peers
- You've been involved in the scene in many different ways - from DJing and organizing parties across China, to opening and running a venue, to helming NTS radio - how do you balance these things, and what's been significant or impactful for you about each?
Five of so years ago I was a big NTS fan. I hit them up to do an NTS tour or something with their residents and they said, ‘Why don’t you do a show?’ When old Elevator was being built, still a bomb site, I was in there doing internet tests getting ready for our first show. NTS has been great for keeping close with the Shanghai and Chinese music community. Each month I’ll book 4 hours of music, always looking out for new talent that’s emerging and providing slots for the old heads.
Smash, the bar I opened with PCJ of China Social Club has a great reputation considering it was only around 6 months. Opening a bar felt like really ‘doing something.’ The Smash days were some of the most fun in my 9 years in Shanghai and probably where I grew the most from a music business perspective.
China Social Club is the constant throughout all of these things. CSC is PCJ and me, currently being held down by me as PCJ has a long sabbatical back in Perth.

你在各种层面上都在参与场景：从DJ，到在全中国办派对，到自己开办和运营场地，到主持NTS电台节目。你是怎么平衡这些事情的，每件事给你带来的意义和影响又是什么？
5年前，我是NTS的忠实粉丝。我联系他们，想和他们的驻场音乐家做一个NTS巡演之类的东西，然后他们说：“你干嘛不做一档节目呢？”当老电梯还在装修，看起来像个爆破现场的时候，我就在那里测过网速，准备做我们的第一期节目。
NTS一直都很棒，棒在他们与上海和中国的音乐圈子保持着紧密的联系。每个月我都会约上4个小时的音乐档期，我一直在寻找后起之秀，也给老相识们留下位置。
（Smash酒吧）
Smash是我和China Social Club的PCJ一起开的酒吧，考虑到它只开了6个月，现在它的名气已经很不错了。开酒吧的感觉像是真的在“做什么事情”。开Smash的日子是我在上海这9年里最有意思的，也可能是我在音乐产业方面成长最多的时间。
China Social Club（CSC）是所有这些事情中的常数。CSC的成员是PCJ和我，目前由我来负责，因为PCJ正在珀斯度长假。
百会（BAIHUI）是什么？它是怎么出现的，后面的计划又怎么样？
百会是Knopha、Slowcook和我一个月前办起来的独立电台。百会指的是头顶上的一个针灸穴位。它是一个交汇点，中国所有让人赞叹的人才都可以在这里遇见，主持节目，并且发现更多的中国音乐。
百会每周会广播两次（很快会有更多的播音日期和更长的播音时长），所有节目都会保存在baihui.live的存档里。这几个月会有更多升级和更多特别节目跟大家见面。
7月23日星期六，我们会在电梯首发IRL电台，7月24日星期天在深圳OIL，然后会在7月31日去到北京招待，我们会带上百会团队和社群中最活跃的成员。
我希望能在这些演出中的某场见到我们美好的社群成员。巡演的所有收入都会用来支持电台，让它继续广播。我们向整个社群传递爱和感恩，百会会继续优化听觉体验，邀请更多更棒的项目和嘉宾到百会的电波上现身。
- What is BAIHUI? How did it come about, and what are its future plans?
BAIHUI is an independent radio station I launched a month ago with Knopha and Slowcook. BAIHUI 百会 refers to the acupuncture point on the top of your head. It’s an intersection to which all of China’s amazing talent can pass through, host a show and discover more music from around China.
BAIHUI broadcasts live twice a week (with more days and longer broadcast times coming soon) and all the shows live on in the archive on BAIHUI.LIVE. There is a lot more improvements and specials that will be dropping over the next few months.
We’re launching the radio IRL this Saturday 23rd at Elevator, Sunday 24th at OIL Shenzhen and then off to Zhaodai, Beijing on the 31st and taking along some of the beating hearts of the BAIHUI crew and community.
I look forward to seeing our wonderful community down at one of the shows. All proceeds from the tour go to keeping the station alive and broadcasting. - Pick three artists for your dream line-up of a night at Elevator. What's the time table? Assume you have unlimited budget and booking powers, including reincarnating past talents to take the decks again.
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Cocteau Twins and Fela Kuti, but they’re not DJing, they’re playing with their full bands, big speakers, outdoors in a forest. 3 hours each (plus encores).
